30" bar stools are commonly used for a raised eating surface in the 40 to 42 inch height range. Many homes and apartments today are built with a standard 36" high counter then have a back splash and raised eating area. In most circumstances, if the eating area is HIGHER than your standard kitchen counter, you will need a 30" stool.
34" and larger bar stools are used for counters that exceed 42" in height. Please double check your measurements before ordering a 34" seat height. These are common enough for manufacturers to produce them but most customers will need a bar stool in the 24" to 30" range.
Why are these heights chosen? Firstly, an average height American will be able to consume a quick snack, either standing by, or sitting up on the kitchen stool with such chosen height of a stool and a bar top. Secondly, it will be possible to prepare breakfast food or drinks on a bar top, even though the 40 inch surface height is a bit high for that purpose. Usually, the food can be prepared from the one side of the bar top while consumed from the other.
Alternatively, you may prefer to buy stools with detachable bar stool that tie-on to the seatbacks. This gives you the advantage of being able to change the covers for cleaning or if you fancy a change of look, and can be useful if your stools get lots of use.
Full height bar stools: These are typically 29 - 32 inches high. They will fit a bar top that is typically between 40 and 42 inches high to accommodate eating a quick bite or sipping a quick drink, either at breakfast time when you are in a rush to get to work, or when you are ready for a quick snack during the day.
Wooden western bar stools would then be upholstered with that cowhide leather, using metal round top tacks, which would provide a look of a western bar stool strongly resembling a horse saddle. Sometimes, a saddle horn would be added to one side of the bar seat to complete such horse saddle bar stool.
